About Moving From
Moving From is a navigation-style platform for planning a relocation inside the United States. Instead of a directory of sponsored listings, it works like a map: every city is a hub, every state is a hub, and every directed route between two places has its own page with the road distance, driving time, a delivery window and a cost range for each home size.
Where the data comes from
- Moving companies. Carrier records are taken from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's motor-carrier census: active, for-hire carriers that declare household goods as cargo. We show the USDOT number, MC number, base location, fleet size and FMCSA safety rating exactly as recorded, and link each card to the FMCSA lookup so you can verify current authority and insurance.
- Cities and states. Population, land area and coordinates come from the US Census Bureau (decennial census, population estimates and gazetteer files).
- Distances. Road miles are estimated from great-circle distance with a typical US road-circuity factor; driving times assume normal highway speeds with rest stops.
- Costs. Ranges are modeled from distance, shipment weight by home size and a regional labor-cost index. See how estimates work.
- Photos. City and state photographs are free-licensed works from Wikimedia Commons; each page credits the photographer and license.
What we do not do
We do not publish invented reviews, star ratings or "top 10" rankings, and we do not accept payment for placement. Company order reflects interstate authority, fleet size and proximity to the city center. We do not perform moves, sell leads or broker shipments; contact carriers directly using the phone number on file.
